How to Watch a Video with Subtitles

Learn how to watch a video with a separate SRT subtitle file using VLC Media Player.

We provide a video with burned-in subtitles as part of the standard workflow. If you want to watch the video with a separate SRT file instead, VLC Media Player is a practical option.

Automatic subtitle loading in VLC

If the video file and the SRT file have the same name and are saved in the same folder, VLC will usually load the subtitles automatically when the video starts.

Example:

myvideo.mp4
myvideo.srt

Manually loading subtitles in VLC

If the files do not have the same name, or are stored in different locations, you can load the subtitles manually.

Step-by-step

  1. Open VLC Media Player and start your video
  2. In the top menu, click Subtitle
  3. Select Add Subtitle File
  4. Browse to your .srt file
  5. Select it and continue playback

The subtitles should now appear on the video.

Need to edit the subtitle file?
