Japanese AI Subtitles

Japanese text has no word spaces. A subtitle engine cannot find natural break points by looking for spaces, so it has to identify grammatical boundaries instead. In Japanese, particles attach directly to the words they modify and carry the structural load of the sentence. When a subtitle card breaks mid-particle group, or cuts a noun phrase off from the verb that completes it, the line on screen ends before the meaning resolves. The viewer reads an incomplete unit and has to hold it while the next card appears. That extra work adds up, especially in content where the pace is quick.

Generic auto captions that wrap at character limits hit this problem routinely. The words are correct. The structure is broken. A card that ends mid-phrase is harder to follow than a card that ends where the spoken thought actually closes, even if both contain identical text.

Japanese subtitle pacing also needs care beyond the segmentation question. A subtitle card timed for English speech may move too fast for a reader parsing dense kanji, or hold longer than needed on a short phonetic passage.
